  • Early Childhood Education: Flint Community Schools offers a number of Early Childhood Education programs to prepare young children for success when they enter primary school.   • Davison Community Schools Special Education services include speech and language therapy, social worker services, resource rooms, specialized classrooms for emotionally and cognitively impaired students, and Early Childhood Special Education classrooms. Davison Community Schools Special Education programs are free to the parents of its students.
  • Flushing Community Schools Special Education offers a full range of programs and services specifically designed for students with disabilities, learning differences, and special needs.     • The Transition Program runs workshops on independent living and employment training for people with disabilities.   • The Flint Housing Commission is a subsidized housing program funded through the Department of Housing and Urban Development that allows low-income seniors, disabled individuals, and families to live independently in inexpensive homes. The Flint Housing Commission owns 1,248 Conventional Public Housing Units throughout Flint and gives priority to those affected by disability.

  • Mass Transit Authority (MTA)- Your Ride: Flint’s Your Ride service is reserved for disabled and senior passengers. The service provides transportation through local centers and offers eleven Service Centers throughout Flint.

  • Longfellow-Summerfield Play Area, located at 1360 Milbourne Avenue in Flint, Michigan, is a Boundless ™ Playground with surfaces accessible to wheelchairs and other disability mobility devices. Longfellow-Summerfield Play Area was ranked as one of Genesee County’s top five playgrounds.
  • The Michigan School for the Deaf and Blind has a playground with flat, wheelchair-accessible surfaces and transfer stations that allow children in wheelchairs to move freely around the play structure. The playground is located at 1667 Miller Road in Flint, Michigan.

3. Recreational Therapy

  • Barrier-Free Boating is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides physically disabled people with free pontoon boating sessions in Otter Lake, MI. The boat is a custom made, barrier-free pontoon boat designed to accommodate up to three wheelchairs simultaneously. The program is based out of a designated shore space in the Otter Lake Village Park and features a wheelchair-accessible fishing platform, boat dock, sidewalks, bathrooms, and specialized tables and grills.
  • Accessible Camping: Holly, Michigan, located just south of the Grand Blanc and Flint area, is home to two Michigan DNR recreation areas with accessibility features. Seven Lakes State Park features accessible fishing zones, beach houses, boat launches, bathrooms, concessions areas, picnic areas and shelters, modern campgrounds, and a barrier free playground. Animal Therapy

  • HEART Horsemanship (Helping Evolve Abilities in Riders through Therapeutic Horsemanship), a therapeutic horseback riding and hippotherapy center in Flushing, Michigan, provides year-round lessons to riders of all ages, abilities, and skill levels. HEART Horsemanship is a PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) International member and provides fully accessible facilities.

  • McLaren Leg Rehabilitation Center Adaptive Golf: McLaren Flint sponsors an adaptive golf program through its Leg Rehabilitation Center. Adaptive golf clinics, lessons, and events help patients restore and improve balance, increase range-of-motion and flexibility, and increase endurance in a fun and therapeutic environment.

  • McLaren Flint’s HydroWorx Pool Therapy helps patients restore and improve strength, endurance, agility, and flexibility in an environment with fewer stresses on the body. The pool temperature is kept between 92 and 98 degrees.
  • Horizon Physical Therapy, located in Flint, Michigan, provides Aquatherapy for patients with a range of medical conditions or rehabilitative needs, some of which include pregnancy-related musculoskeletal pain, difficulty walking, extremity injuries, and others.
Special Needs Camps
  • The Rainbow Rehabilitation Center’s Genesee Treatment Center offers two pediatric rehabilitation programs outside patients’ regular school hours. The Summer Fun! Program, a summer program designed for children and teens recovering from brain injuries, organizes recreational outings, exercises, and activities focused on restoring function, increasing independence and responsibility, encouraging curiosity and exploration, and supporting fit and health lifestyles. The After School & Saturday Programs are designed to help pediatric patients recover from brain injury through therapy, individual tutoring, group academic guidance, social skills training, and recreation.

4. Occupational Therapy

  • McLaren Occupational Therapy Services offers full therapy services to people with varying mental, physical, developmental, and emotional disabilities at both the Flint and Lapeer Region Medical Centers. Occupational therapy services include physical agent modalities, custom splinting, rage of motion exercises, sensory and muscular reeducation, pain control, coordination exercises, Activities of Daily Living retraining, and more.

5. Speech and Language Therapy

  • The Speech Language Learning Center (SLLC) of Flint offers a full continuum of speech and language therapy and pathology services. SLLC services include speech screenings, evaluations, treatment, occupational therapy, summer speech language learning programs, continuing education presentations, and more.
  • McLaren Flint and McLaren Lapeer offer Speech and Language Therapy Services for patients with medical conditions and rehabilitative needs such as brain injury, neurological disorder, swallowing disorders, apraxia, dysarthria, voice impairments, aphasia, language delays and more.

6. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

  • McLaren Flint Specialty Center and Wound Care Clinic, McLaren Lapeer Wound Care Center, and Genesys HBOT Center all provide Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy facilities for patients. During a patient’s first visit, facility staff will evaluate the medical condition, review medical history, and determine the proper course of treatment. Staff from each HBOT facility will prepare a specialized treatment program tailored to the patient’s individual medical needs.

7. Complementary and Alternative Therapies

  • McLaren Flint offers a range of complementary and alternative medicine services for patients with chronic, prolonged, or medically complex health conditions. Some complementary and alternative therapies available through McLaren Flint include Nutritional Counseling and Therapy, Wellness Services, educational events, and fitness classes designed to promote personal fitness and rehabilitation goals.

8. Behavioral Therapy and Emotional Counseling

  • McLaren Flint Behavioral Health Services: At McLaren Flint, an interdisciplinary team of medical professionals work together to deliver patient-centered mental health treatments. McLaren provides Inpatient Mental Health Services for adults, Psychiatric Partial Hospital Programs for adolescents and adults transitioning to less intensive care, and McLaren Outpatient Behavioral Health Services for children, adolescents, and adults with depression, anxiety, stress, and other mental health issues.
  • McLaren Lapeer Region Behavioral Services: McLaren Lapeer Region provides behavioral services for patients ages 12 and older. Inpatient services include psychiatric evaluation, medication management, diagnostic assessment, individual, group, and family therapy, and emergency consultations.

  • Hillside Center for Behavioral Services is the outpatient behavioral health center at Genesys Regional Medical Center. Services at Hillside Center include treatment and management of conditions including depression, anxiety, problems of daily living, and many others.
  • Mott Children’s Health Center Child & Adolescent Psychiatry provides mental health treatment and prevention services, psychological testing, support groups, and educational events for children affected by medical illness, complex conditions, and more.
  • The Judson Center provides both in- and outpatient behavioral health services for those with mental health, behavioral, or emotional problems. The care team consists of certified therapists with extensive education in Motivational Interviewing, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. The In-Home Family Treatment Program, available to those in Genesee County, is a 6 month program that provides services including conflict resolution, individual and family therapy, psychiatric services, parenting skills, communication exercises, and much more.
