What is Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE)?

Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a type of neonatal brain injury caused by oxygen deprivation around the time of birth. Other names for hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy include neonatal encephalopathy (NE), intrapartum asphyxia, and birth asphyxia. HIE is the result of hypoxia (a shortage of oxygen in the blood) and ischemia (a decreased flow of oxygenated blood to the brain), and the brain damage often leads to permanent injuries and disabling conditions. Depending on the severity of the hypoxic ischemic insult, people with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy may go on to have cerebral palsy (CP), neurodevelopmental delays, intellectual impairments and learning disabilities, seizure disorders, periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), and other related issues.
