What is Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy?

Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy is a type of neonatal brain injury that results from oxygen deprivation before, during, or after a baby is delivered. The brain damage characteristic of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy may occur from a lack of oxygen in the blood (“hypoxia”) or decreased oxygen and blood flow to the brain (“ischemia”). Depending on the severity of the oxygen-depriving complication, HIE often results in epilepsy and other seizure disorders, neurodevelopmental issues, developmental delays, cerebral palsy, motor control and function impairments, cognitive impairments, and related conditions. In extreme cases, hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy can even be fatal.

What Causes HIE?

Common causes of partial prolonged asphyxia include abnormally high amniotic fluid levels (a condition known as oligohydramnios), failed resuscitation of a newborn after delivery, preeclampsia, hypertension, hypotension, uterine hyperstimulation, strong contractions, placental problems, umbilical cord compression, and nuchal cords.
Mixed Injury Pattern Asphyxia blends both acute profound asphyxia and partial prolonged asphyxia.
