Video Transcript:

My name is Andrea Shea and I’m a registered nurse. I’m the on-site nurse here at Michigan Cerebral Palsy Attorneys. The team at Michigan Cerebral Palsy Attorneys have fought for many families affect by preventable birth injuries that have resulted in cerebral palsy.

There are some treatments that are available that help to minimize cerebral palsy. One important treatment is called hypothermia treatment, sometimes it’s called whole body cooling. It’s critical that it’s administered immediately after birth, within the first four hours. This type of treatment minimizes the effects of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and it helps to prevent further brain damage. Other treatments are aimed at managing the symptoms of cerebral palsy, such as medication that help with involuntary movements.

There are many types of therapies available for children with cerebral palsy. Two of the most important types of therapies are occupational and physical therapy. Those therapies are aimed at helping children with their fine motor dexterity, fine motor movements, as well as gross motor movements. Another type of therapy that’s very helpful for children with cerebral palsy is speech therapy. Often when young children or infants are diagnosed, they have difficulty with swallowing or with speaking. Speech therapy is very useful in early recognition to help develop the muscles and to help coordinate movements for these children so that they can have maximum ability for feeding, eating, and speaking.

When children are diagnosed with cerebral palsy and early intervention with these types of therapies is provided, it can really help to minimize some of the deficits these children experience and help to maximize their functioning of daily living. Other types of therapies include stem cell therapy, as well as alternative therapies.

We aim to connect families with resources. We not only provide these resources for our clients, but they’re available to anyone. Please feel free to browse our website. There are many resources available that help to maximize every child’s quality of life.
